Photos of our Life ~~ Sheila & Ed

62. Entrance

This is the entrance to our Edgemere Drive In – which has gone by the wayside.  I don’t think we have any active Drive In Theaters any longer.  I used 3 bracketed exposures to try to get some more detail.  The blue of the sky against the blue sign was very difficult to make sure they were separated.

  1. I love that sign! Great blue sky in the background. I did a photo of the same sign in 2009 here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockney/4196709349/

  2. Drive-Ins seem to have died out here in Australia, which is understandable with all the enormous SVUs on the road, you wouldn’t be able to see the screen! But I have memories close to your Entrance.

  4. I love this sign! We had a Drive-In close to us and I never got a picture of the sign before it was taken down. :-( Just an idea – did you try a black and white or split tone? That would have helped the tricky separation of blues.

    • Thanks for hints Julie — I’ll have to try that!

We used to go to the drive in all the time when the boys were babies…only way to get a night out! They just recently closed our last drive in which was really sad…tons of great memories there!

I agree w/ Julie…a black and white would make for a great contrast…but I do like your color version as well…with the sign being almost a navy blue it is a nice separation.

Drive Ins do make a great subject matter, so get them while you can! I like how someone tried to write the days of operation in with a felt pen or paint. I guess they were on a budget?

  8. So few drive in movies left in this country. Save this one for a time capsule.

  9. A very cool sign, such a bright cheery looking day sort of disagrees with the decay of the sign and of drive-ins in general (there is one in my town ,come on by!)

Yes, I had one of these close to my hometown, closed up a good 30 years ago. I remember the last movies I saw there were 3 horror flicks. One was called The House That Dripped Blood. Good times back then!

We have luxury condos and a shopping center where our drive ins used to be. The barely legible OPEN on the marquee at the bottom makes this quite poignant.

  12. I think you did a great job separating the blues. Nice shot.

  13. There is a drive in still in operation in Door County. . .the summer tourists love it. Love your processing of the sign against the blue sky.

  14. What an entrance! I expect it was a very noticeable sign in its hey-day.. Its sad to hear of a culture like a drive-in all but disappearing.
